It’s no surprise that Valentine’s Day occurs during the sixth week of New-Year’s-Resolution-Diet Season. Most of us have fallen off our well-intentioned dietary or behavioral interventions and it is still the dark of winter! Our hearts (and egos) need a little sunshine in the form of chocolate or champagne or a little extra time between the sheets.
Chocolate and sex both release endorphins in the brain. Endorphins are the “peptides that activate the body’s opiate receptors, causing an analgesic effect.” (Wikipedia) In lay terms (wink, wink, nudge, nudge), endorphins are the feel-good hormones that make good sex great and good chocolate spectacular.
Sex and chocolate can give us just the euphoric rush we need to bring us back from the self-doubt of failed New Year’s Resolutions. But as wonderful that euphoric rush is, its longevity is not usually sustainable. Roll out your red carpet of yogic bliss, however, and you might just find something to keep you going.
Like sex and chocolate, yoga releases endorphins. And it may also boost your libido. A recent article in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy suggests that yoga increases your own body awareness, which in turn increases your sensitivity to your needs and those of your partner. Yoga and pranayama (yogic breathing) also increase the blood flow in the upper body and the pelvic region which can have nice bennies in the boudoir.
Unlike sex and chocolate, yoga has lasting effects. The practice helps us recognize negative behaviors and beliefs so we can change them. It relieves the stress that can lead to unhealthy self image. It helps us let go of the need to be perfect. Yoga fosters self-love and acceptance.
