Yoga has always been the exclusive purview of the subcultures of the Zeitgeist. Practiced by the misfits and the esoteric, yoga has traditionally been what some people call “really out there.”
In this deeply centering class we’ll explore the inner and outer landscapes of what it really means to go against the main stream and express our true nature in meaningful and fashionable ways.
Using appropriate props, hula hoops, and irony, we will celebrate the differences and similarities that we all share: “Everybody is identical in their secret unspoken belief that way deep down they are different from everyone else.” (David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest)

We’ll engage in a vigorous practice on ethically-sourced yoga mats. Our yoga playlist will include Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Arcade Fire, Youth Lagoon and Bon Iver. We’ll end the class with a reading from Kerouac’s The Dharma Bums.
This practice will encourage improvisation and play. Wear something plaid you can move in and that expresses the true you (no Lululemon, or other labels please). Wool caps and accessories encouraged. Creative facial hair recommended but not required.
Awaken your inner hip in this fun, innovative class!
