Evolution PT and Yoga mourns the loss and the senseless killing of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many more people who have faced violence and racial injustice.  As a business owner and member of this community, I have felt outrage, sadness, fear, and also a sense of helplessness. This pattern keeps happening over and over. The desire to just go back to normal and wait until this passes doesn’t solve anything. This is not just an issue that marginalized groups of people have to solve on their own. This is a whole host of issues that we all need to be involved in solving. How can we make a change that is meaningful and real and moves our society forward in a positive direction? Being silent and sitting helplessly in fear and sadness isn’t effective. This is hard work that needs to be sustained. As a member of this community Evolution is committed to fostering an environment that is safe and welcoming and supports a culture of active discussion. We need to examine where we can do better. I have made mistakes, but I am committed to learning, listening, growing, and taking action. I challenge you to do the same. Our yoga practice has prepared us for this. Start observing. Notice what makes you uncomfortable. Inform yourself. Watch the video that you have the urge to scroll by, read the article, listen to the radio story. Have those hard conversations with your family, neighbors, community members. I urge you to think about how you can check yourself, own your mistakes, be kind to one another, and encourage one another to work together. Move out of your comfort zone.

“I am no longer accepting the things I cannot change. I am changing the things I cannot accept.”
― Angela Y. Davis

Our yoga practice is a path of self-discovery and transformation. Anti-racist work, racial justice work is all part of this practice.  This week, next month, over the next year and beyond, how can you take action to help this community, country, and world transform? I am proud to work with a group of people committed to making change. Sasha Finnell has been a quiet yet powerful figure in shaping Evolution over the past year. She has literally been holding up the backbone of our business as we have navigated change after change during COVID-19. We wouldn’t be here without her tireless work. Please join me in supporting Sasha as she leads a Fundraising Class –  Yoga for Unity to raise money for the ACLU of Vermont.
