The piriformis is a small muscle that is located deep in the buttock. While it is small it is mighty! It is responsible for the stability of the hip and sacroiliac joint, and can often become overworked, leading to deep buttock pain, otherwise known as “piriformis syndrome.” The sciatic nerve runs beneath, or in some cases through the piriformis muscle belly, so tension in the piriformis can lead to sciatic nerve pain. Shortness, stiffness and weakness in the piriformis can contribute to both hip and buttock pain, leading to reduced ability to practice yoga and fully participate in recreational, work and home activities.
Join Michelle Downing DPT for this workshop that explores yoga based strategies to release tension in the piriformis. This workshop is appropriate for all levels from yoga students to yoga instructors. Learn the basic anatomy of the piriformis and surrounding structures. Explore passive and active poses to reduce tone and improve strength of the piriformis. You will leave with an improved understanding of how this muscle relates to the hips and pelvis as well as simple yoga program that you can do to reduce piriformis tension.
