We all know the importance of proper breathing to keep us calm, centered and balanced. However, the importance of the breath goes beyond mindfulness and relaxation. The diaphragm is the top portion of the deepest core stabilizing structures, and its misuse can lead to not only shallow breathing but poor dynamic stability of the lumbar spine.
If you have chronic tension in your shoulders and neck, this may be in part due lack of diaphragmatic breathing leading to overworked neck muscles. Lack of efficient breathing may be due to limited mobility through the thoracic spine and abdomen. To top it all off, stress or emotional factors may lead to chronic chest breathing.
In this workshop with Michelle Downing DPT, you will learn how to open your body to make space for the breath, and work to develop efficient breathing through yoga, meditation and pranayama.
