Tips for Backbends

March 30th, 2009 by Evolution Yoga
  • Begin by rooting evenly down through your foundation on the Earth (feet, sitting bones, knees, belly).
  • Lengthen the spine as you breathe
  • Invite the bend to move from the low back, into t he middle back, up to the top center of your back
  • Let the collar bones spread wide and the shoulders roll down the back
  • Let the tail softly scoop to protect the low back
  • The more your upper body contributes to the effort of the bend, the less likely you will be to over-arch the low back and cause injury
  • Stay in the back bend as long as you are energized and present
  • Lower down or rise up slowly and with control
  • Rest
