May all beings everywhere be happy and free, and may the thoughts, words, and actions of my own life, contribute in some way, to the happiness and freedom for all.

I wanted to get this tattooed and was hoping you could clear up what it means. I know this is a chant but is what posted on here written in sanskrit? And does the text say “may all beings everywhere be happy and free” or the rest of the chant as well? (and may the thoughts, words, and actions…”)
Anyway, if you could get back to me that’d be great. Thanks very much!

This is one of my favorite mantras Riley! I used to sing it to my daughter often, now I chant the Gayatri Mantra to her. With any mantra or chant, the translations are endless, and as are the vibrations from repeating them out-loud or in our heads. I like the “May all beings everywhere be happy and free” translation and it resonates within. lokah samasta sukhino bhavantu appears also in the Ashtanga yoga closing chant…Recite it, and feel what it means to you. It could be change and evolve over time. Namaste ~ Petra
