Jane volunteers at COTS
People staying at COTS deeply understand that life can be full of ups and downs.
This morning I had the pleasure of visiting the COTS Family Shelter on Main Street to practice yoga with a mother and son receiving temporary shelter there.
The sun shone warmly into the kids play-room where the class was held; the bright light and the Bamboo Flute CD I brought, helped the space to feel calm. Though we had many distractions during our even some outbursts from pur young yogi, yoga was transmitted to both mother and son and I learned a ton from this woman: integrity, grace, openness.
Spreading wide through her feet on the Earth, I watched this young woman become increasingly grounded. As she lifted hands up into the sky and found emptiness through breath, I could see her grabbing new space, new hope, new vision. The power of her yoga inspired her son to follow along at his own pace, as any yogi should. He even proclaimed at the end: “Let’s play more yoga!”
I left feeling deeply connected to these two humans and to this practice which unites us all with our own self and with one another. I can’t wait to go back to COTS! Thank you God, despite all the suffering, for the many blessings that abound.

I work at Spectrum Youth & Family Services (a Burlington organization that provides housing for homeless and at-risk youth) and I would love to bring yoga to the youth living there. Jane, thank you for sharing this experience and inspiring me to share the gift of yoga.
