Introduction to Mudras

February 9th, 2009 by Evolution Yoga

Mudras are positions of the hands and body that effect the energy of the body, or the mood.  As Bill’s blog explains, the hands have over 2,000 nerve endings.  Positioning the hands in specific postures, evokes different responses from the nervous system, from invigortaing, to calming, and many moods in between.

Mudras evolved alongside the asanas and have been practiced in the East for thousands of years.  Some people form mudras out of habit, without even realizing.

To use a mudra, hold the position in the hands for at least a few moments.   Use both hands simultaneously for more effectiveness.

MUDRAS FOR BALANCED ENERGY-

When done in a row, these 4 mudras invite relaxation and concentration.  When practices seperately, the effects follow:

  • Touch your thumb to the tip of your index finger – opens root chakra, invites calm and focus
  • Touch your thumb to the tip of middle finger- invites peace and patience
  • Touch your thumb to the tip of the ring finger- invites optimism, confidence, stability, invigorates
  • Touch thum to tip of pinky finger- stimulates intuition and awareness
