Firefly: May pose of the month

May 3rd, 2010 by Evolution Yoga

fireflyevolution explores the idea of bringing lightness and new perspective this month with Firefly (Tittibhasana)… soar, balance, achieve new insight!

Firefly is an arm balance that is tougher than it looks.  Much of the strength required is from inner awareness of the bandhas and core strength.

Firefly stretches the backs of the leg, strengthens the wrists, abdominal muscles and forearms.

How to enter Firefly:

1. Find a wide squat pose.

2. Place your palms flat on the floor just under your feet.

3. Bend the elbows back as you would in Plank Pose.

4. Start shifting your center of gravity back to rest on your upper arms.  Keep your inner thighs high up on your arms.

5. When you can, lift your feet of the floor.

6. Straighten the legs.

7. Broaden your collar bones, widen the shoulders, lift your gaze.

8. Begin to straighten the arms.

9. Breathe and relax here up to 15 seconds.

10. Eventually, cross your feet.

For one thing, if you fall, you’ll land on your butt instead of your head — as in some other poses! If you can lift the feet off of the floor but cannot straighten the legs, try crossing the feet at the ankles in front of you.
