This Practice has been inspired by my own yoga and meditation practice as well as many live music experiences over the years. For those of you who have your own yoga practice and love to experience live music there is a great opportunity to extend your practice to your concert experience as well as take something back to yoga. As my own practice grows over time there is no other band that allows me to go deeper than Phish. I recently attended the Phish weekend festivities at SPAC on 6/19 and 6/20 for two amazing shows where i both lost my self to the jam and found my self within it.
What is it about Phish that draws so many fans and also is a great opportunity for deepening your meditation practice ? 1) Tension and Release – the ability to build the energy of a song, slowly release that energy just to come right back and go even higher. It is a full body experience, the band, the intensity, the sound, the crowd, smiling faces, dancing! It is a constant flow of your own energy as it rises and falls with each song throughout the entire show. 2) Extended Jam – The ability for the entire band to improvise together taking any song as a base, turning it into something unexpected and then somehow bringing you back. Jams lasting anywhere from 1 min to 20 min , a complete journey with many ups and downs. (Many other band also utilize these qualities and they are in no way limited to Phish alone)
If your at a Phish show or enjoying any live music experience, here is a practice of live music meditation:

You have two options for posture and i would encourage that you alternate between them spontaneously.

Mountain Pose – Stand with your feet hip distance apart. Feel your feet root into the ground. Thighs reach back as tailbone scoops engaging Mula Bundha. Reaching out of your hips as your spine grows tall. Side body long, inner body bright. Shoulders reach back and apart then relax.

Mindful Dancing – This is a dynamic pose that will be unique for every person. How ever you feel moved and what ever the music is asking of your body, Dance ! Begin to flow with the music. Follow its energy and rhythm, when the music is slow and soft move slow and soft, when the music is fast and raging move fast and raging. Allow there to be no judgment or comments on your movement, allow your self to dance as if no one were watching and you could care less even if they were. Be aware of every movement your body makes, staying present with your body not lost in your mind.

Normally while experiencing live music you would send your energy outward; screaming , clapping , throwing your hands in the air, singing, dancing (in a subtly different way than used in this practice), taking in the energy from the music and releasing it into the crowd. You also may come in and out of moments with mindfulness; one moment enjoying the full experience of the music, one moment internally judging if you are having a good time or not, one moment recalling an event from the past or daydreaming about the future. These moments happen very fast jumping from one thing to the next melding together creating your entire perceived experience.
In this practice you will take this energy and send it inward stabilizing it with mindfulness.
Begin in Mountain Pose. Bring your awareness to your physical body feeling a sense of relaxation comfort and ease. Let you body and breath settle in its natural state. Now bring your awareness to the sound of the music, let your eyes close and be completely engulfed in the sound. Open your eyes adapt to your surroundings , there may be hundreds of other people around you, stay calm and focused. Allow the external sound to merge with your physical body becoming aware of the music and the sensations that the music produces in your body. Naturally feel the music build on your inhale and fall on your exhale. Allow your breath to ride on the rhythm of the song. This experience will be the object of your meditation, the combination of the external sound and the internal physical sensations. Apply mindfulness to this object, as your mind begins to wander and comment or judge your experience notice that this is happening and bring your attention back. Allowing your thoughts to be in the background without grasping or aversion deepen your concentration on sound and sensation. As the energy begins to rise and fall notice what this does to your body with out actively “doing” anything. In the music let there just be the music. Where you normally would send your energy outward with a yell or motion notice this urge and contain the energy inward as you subtly begin to build inside. While the band is jamming follow the jam note by note staying mindful of every sound and every sensation that sound produces in your body. As the tension builds around you feel the stillness within as your energy also rises. When you reach a point where you spontaneously need to move break out of stillness into mindful dance.
As you finally begin to release some of your energy make sure that you stay mindful of your actions. Notice how easy it is to allow your body to dance but allow your mind to be bouncing from thought to thought. Once you are comfortable dancing and have your “home moves” which require no effort from your body to remember how to do, it is easy to be lost in thought. Notice when you are no longer mindful of your movement and bring your attention back to your physical body. Be aware of the position of your hands and feet in space. Break out of your pre-programmed “home moves” and allow your body to have a unique movement with every note that is played. Pick a instrument that is improvising in the jam, Guitar, Bass, Piano, Drums, etc …. Focus your attention on that one instrument and allow your body to follow its every movement. Begin to improvise the dance its self as if you were just another instrument adding to the jam. Let the intensity of your movements flow with the intensity of the song. When you feel your energy reaching a low mindfully transition back to mountain pose recharging for the next jam. When the song is over as every one is clapping and screaming stand strong in mountain pose and soak in the experience and energy of the crowd.
Experiment with the flow from mountain to dance and back. Notice what it is like to fully experience the music with out losing focus, no judgment no comments. Bare sound and sensation facilitated by the band and the crowd. This is not so different from a yoga practice. Allowing your body to move and flow staying mindful of your actions and the quality of your thoughts. As with the dance practice, it is very easy to learn a yoga pose so well your body requires very little effort to maintain it. This is where your mind can begin to wander even though you are fully in the pose. When this happens become mindful, bring your attention back to the physical sensations of your body. Be aware of the position of your hands and feet in space. Send you energy inward, go deeper, one pointed awareness.

-Post written by Colette Crawford, RN, BSN, courtesy of Seattle Holistic Center

Many pregnant women in our classes talk about experiencing leg cramps, especially during the second trimester. They can be surprisingly painful, with muscle aches lasting for days. The rest of us can also get leg cramps this time of year, with our increased activities, and the dehydration that sometimes comes with it! To help avoid leg cramps, make sure you are getting potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium – in the right ratio.

Foods that are high in these minerals are: bananas, oranges, grapefruit, yogurt, cottage cheese, dark green leafy vegetables, like kale, salmon, sardines, almonds and others. Eat plenty of these foods to help prevent leg cramps.Carbonated beverages are also known to interfere with your body’s calcium uptake, so do your best to avoid drinking these and sodas on a regular basis. Instead, brew a pot of raspberry leaf and nettle tea. Mix half of the tea with orange juice and you’ll have a wonderful supply of these minerals to discourage leg cramps.

Another benefit for pregnant women is that these herbs tone the uterus, which can help during labor and birth. Sometimes pregnant women experience restless legs, when legs ache or jerk, especially at night. This may indicate anemia or low iron. Nettles are high in iron so it is beneficial to drink nettle tea.
If you get a leg cramp: flex your foot – bring the toes toward the ankle – and extend through the ball of the foot and heel. Do not point your toes as this can increase the cramp. If you have varicose veins do not massage your leg or apply heat until a clot is ruled out.

Also try these poses:

Runner’s stretch – Stand with your hands supported, about 3 feet from a wall or table. Bring your right foot forward and step your left foot back. Bend the right knee and straighten your left leg. Breathe steadily and deeply. Soften into the left calf muscle as you exhale. Change sides.

Pyramid pose – Place your hands on a wall or table with the right foot about 2 feet away from the wall. Step your left leg back with the toes turned in about 60 degrees. Have your heels in line. Square your hips, firm your legs and as you exhale bend forward at the hips. Walk the hands up the wall to extend your spine. Root strongly through the feet. This pose also helps with sciatica and hip pain.

When I first started practicing yoga I was working by myself, and was having very little interaction with people. I remember thinking that I knew exactly what was going to happen every day because I wasn’t going to meet anyone to make things any different. I was pretty isolated, really. I also practiced in an isolated way of not being that aware of the people around me.

But, then something started to happen. Over time I become more and more aware of the people around me who were practicing, and it felt good. I felt more connected to my surroundings. At the same time, I was becoming more connected to my surroundings outside of yoga and was more and more working and surrounding myself with other people. That’s really the kind of person I am. I can certainly be isolated, but ultimately being around people is just more fun and I’m way happier with other people.

I feel that through just doing the practice I became more in touch with my true self, who I really was, and I started to connect and create a world that was more connected to the real me. I like the idea of thinking that through the practice of yoga what you need, what your True Self needs, comes to be. The person you are on the outside slowly starts to transform into the person you really are inside. It’s a nice thing to consider, and yet another reason to keep practicing and discovering through yoga.

As much as you practice, as much as you study, as much as you learn from your teachers and life, try as hard as you might you never really find Yoga.

It is not out there to be found, it is not a concept to one day grasp, it is not an experience to one day have.

It is right now, in each moment, what ever is, exactly as it is.
All of the information out there, is just a hint on what Yoga may or may not be like for you.
Every one of us are unique expressions of the same whole.
Although at its source Yoga is the same we each have our own unique perception and experience of what it is to us.
So stop looking for Yoga you cant find it. It will never meet some kind of theoretical, conceptual expectation you may put on it.
Let Yoga find you, be completely open to this experience right now. That’s all there is …

Start your Tuesday morning with a level 3 community class at Evolution.
7-9 am
$5-$10 Donation

Join Danny Morris for a practice derived from the Anusara Eye of the Tiger sequence. This class is an opportunity for the Intermediate to Advanced student to take their practice to the next level. The 2 hour practice flows through sun salutations, inversions, standing poses, hip openers, arm balances, headstands, back bends, shoulder stands, forward bends and twists concluding with meditation and savasana. Broken down into four unique sequences each week we explore a different set of advanced poses in each category. The poses are called out a few at a time allowing each student to work at their own pace. In an open friendly and fun workshop environment each student can share what they have learned about the pose and offer each other assists when needed. Sometimes progress is made, sometimes we still laugh at the thought of achieving a pose but its good to start somewhere and attempt what you never thought was possible. After challenging yourself relax into your heart for a deep meditation and savasana leaving you invigorated and empowered to begin your day.

Doing the Down Dog… With the Dog

You’ve heard of the Down Dog Pose, but what about doing the Down Dog with an actual pup? Doggie yoga, or “doga,” has taken off across the country, allowing for yoga enthusiasts to bond with their canine companions in an entirely new way. No Frisbees, rubber balls, or rawhide bones – doga is all about stretching, balance, and building a deep bond with your favorite pooch.

The practice of doga combines massages, meditation, and yoga stretches for both the humans and animals involved. Doga emphasizes the importance of constant physical contact between the pup and the owner. This contact helps otherwise nervous or jittery dogs to calm down as their owners do a variety of yoga poses around them, sometimes even using them like props. For example, in one Seattle Humane Society yoga session, the Down Dog is done just like it would be done any other time, except in doga, the top of your head does not rest on the mat, but on your pup’s relaxed or snoozing body. When a session is going well, most of the pups involved in the doga class will stay relatively calm, thanks in no small part to the gentle energy being generated around the room.

Doga is a generally new thing, and obviously has attracted its fair share of critics. It is lambasted as being a silly fad by some, especially because the idea of a dog doing yoga can understandably seem absurd. Yet, the experience can be hugely beneficial to both the dog and the human involved. Animals have long provided people with a sense of love and calm. Combining the relaxing and stress-reducing practice of yoga with the calming effect of a loved puppy’s presence invariably makes many dog owners happy, which in turn is good for mental health. In addition, just as owning a dog can encourage an owner to regularly take walks or jogs, doga can encourage an owner to regularly practice yoga. This will benefit the owner’s overall physical health. As for the pooches, many of the stretches and massages are done to encourage healthy digestion and circulation. However, most importantly, none of the dogs in doga are ever forced to participate in anything that would harm them.

All in all, doga should not so much be seen as an alternative to regular “normal” yoga sessions, but rather as another fun way to incorporate yoga into your life. It will allow you to bond with your beloved pet while also participating in a fun group exercise that gives you and your pup a break from the typical daily walk in the park.

It’s spring marathon season. If you aren’t a runner, or a marathon runner at that, you may not have even known that there was a marathon season. Or two of them for that matter. But there are. Spring, when the weather in most of the country is starting to get nice again. No snow, no ice. And Fall, when the weather starts to cool off again. Less humidity, fewer bugs. Of course marathons are held year round, but there are more of them in the spring and fall. This includes the Vermont City Marathon. If you aren’t involved in this event in some capacity, runner, relay teammate, volunteer, the VCM may only mean that you have to wait in traffic on North Avenue while hundreds of runners slog along the side of the road looking somewhere between tired and downright miserable. But to many, this event is the culmination of months of training, planing, organizing, and hoping.

What does this have to do with yoga?

To me, yoga is the “anti-run.” And I don’t mean, that it’s everything running isn’t, because there are many similarities. But yoga does for me many things running doesn’t. And yoga un-does for me many things running does. Running is repetitive. Marathon running is VERY repetitive. Yoga moves the body in all different directions. Yoga restores mobility, balance and stability. Yoga grounds the mind to be present in the here and now. Running, well, anyone who’s run a marathon knows that the last thing you need at mile 23 is to be aware – acutely aware – of where you are and what you’re doing. Denial and escape – now that’s more like it.

But together, running and yoga make a good team. Yoga can be a vital asset to a marathon training program – to “un-do” the repetitive motions. To improve strength, balance, breathing and mindfulness. And running brings time for exploring the outside world and letting the mind wander to all reaches.
