Start your Tuesday morning with a level 3 community class at Evolution.
7-9 am
$5-$10 Donation

Join Danny Morris for a practice derived from the Anusara Eye of the Tiger sequence. This class is an opportunity for the Intermediate to Advanced student to take their practice to the next level. The 2 hour practice flows through sun salutations, inversions, standing poses, hip openers, arm balances, headstands, back bends, shoulder stands, forward bends and twists concluding with meditation and savasana. Broken down into four unique sequences each week we explore a different set of advanced poses in each category. The poses are called out a few at a time allowing each student to work at their own pace. In an open friendly and fun workshop environment each student can share what they have learned about the pose and offer each other assists when needed. Sometimes progress is made, sometimes we still laugh at the thought of achieving a pose but its good to start somewhere and attempt what you never thought was possible. After challenging yourself relax into your heart for a deep meditation and savasana leaving you invigorated and empowered to begin your day.

1. EVO: how did you find yoga?
Danielle: I began practicing at 14 or 15 to cross train while dancing with a Junior ballet company in Philadelphia. The director of the company said it would help us gain strength and flexibility and improve our breathing during intense performances. It did and I continued to call on Ujjayi breath during performances and competitions for the length of my performing career.

2. EVO: how do your dance and yoga backgrounds overlap?
Danielle: During college I became very interested in modern dance. After breaking my left foot while rehearsing Martha Graham’s Night Journey at age 20, I began to focus on yoga alignment and felt a connection to styles and teachers that projected that. After this accident and healing I began to professionally bgirl(radiance) and hip hop dance and choreograph. I realize the alignment that I gained it my practice was a perfect counter balance to my breakin. It also made me stronger for more complex movements and balances (freezes). One dance studio I was teaching for at the time of my injury found out through conversation that I practiced yoga and encouraged me to get certified so I could begin teaching yoga there. That was when I received my first certification and found I really loved to teach. I also began the female hip hop/ breakin company at this time with a few other Philly dancers.

A year passed and I went for another flow training and then moved to AZ. After my hubby finished school we moved back east and I knew it was time to take it further with yoga. I had been teaching & performing hip hop six days a week in AZ as well as traveling to LA once a month to train. During this crazy time I still taught several yoga classes per week and had a wonderful home practice but I knew I had to take it further. This is when I found Verge and decided to take the 200 hour ytt. Before finishing I was asked to teach at the studio and after completion I became a daily teacher there. This quickly lead to my yoga alliance E-RYT and less dance teaching but still performing with my company B-tru which now was mostly a group of yoginis that preformed hip hop as background dancers for emcees and deejays.

3. EVO: how does yoga inspire you as an individual and as a new-mother?
Danielle: It inspires every moment from the food I eat ( I became vegetarian soon after I began practicing and vegan shortly after that), the way I feel and breath the air, the way to sit stand interact and the list goes on! As a mother it helps posture how I hold Garnet but also how we interact together. He is a loving and calm child that always is considerate of others. He is my blessing. I feel his old soul already understands and came to me to teach me ! He is my Guru! Honest and profound my life has new meaning and a new awaking of the present moment.

4. EVO: what is one thing you want your students to know about you they might not already know?
Danielle: I am planning to Begin my 500 hour yoga teacher training once Garnet weens himself. I trained the Villanova and St Joes University sports teams in yoga when I lived outside Philadelphia and had lots of private clients.
I didn’t know I either wanted or needed change. That is, until it offered itself. And, often, it isn’t until we make a change, that we realize how much it was needed. This is true in many facets of life. If we sit with poor posture, it often isn’t until we stand up from that position that we realize it may not have been an ideal way to sit. I do this quite often. I have a habit of sitting in a chair with one leg tucked underneath me. It’s quite comfortable. Until I stand, realize my foot has gone numb, and any weight put through it causing pain to shoot through my leg. Oops.

When I heard Janet was looking for a physical therapist to join her at evolution my heart jumped. I ran into the kitchen to share this news with my husband. “Great!” he said. He never posed the statement that everyone else did, “I thought you liked your job.” I did like my job. But here was an opportunity to change. To grow. To stretch and reach new heights. The continuity of my past 12 years as a physical therapist has given me the roots, the foundation, for my work. evolution has offered opportunity to teach more yoga classes, to connect with this community, to grow.

I’m looking forward to growing here. To incorporating yoga even more into my physical therapy practice. To continuing to teach “Yoga for a Healthy Back” but also teaching a community class. To working with yogis and also introducing new people to the practice of yoga. So whether you have an injury and need a physical therapist who will understand your active lifestyle, you want to learn ways to use yoga to decrease back pain, or you just want to come to an easy to moderately paced yoga class, I’ll see you here, at evolution.

Over a celebration dinner we played a game of each coming up with five surprising things about our marriage. Over two hours, we moved back through time and unearthed these nuggets of gold. I found myself at one point, staring at his face. I looked – and saw the physical man of today. One considerably older, wiser and more accomplished than the hitchhiking musician/adventurer that I met long ago. I looked again – and got a glimpse of the layers of the good times and trials that we’ve been through.

MM: In my second year of college, after changing majors twice I was not satisfied with the road that I was traveling down and I needed a change. I then planned to take a year off of school to try to re-align my goals and aspirations with who I am. During the last year of attending Champlain College I had been taking their yoga classes they provided to the students and was inspired by the teacher. She had mentioned she had trained at Kripalu. Kripalu- a then foreign name, began to start popping up more and more as the months went on. I started taking more Kripalu classes at Evolution and the final sign to be a yoga teacher came to me. In the middle of a Saturday morning class wonderful Jane Jarecki Lanza purposed to the class “If you don’t like your job, become a yoga instructor” Bingo! After planning accordingly I resigned from my sandwich serving post in downtown Burlington and spent a month training at Kripalu. Bliss has followed.

2. EVO: Who do you think can most benefit from yoga?
MM: I think there are a lot of people that can benefit from yoga. There is a big under-served population in our area that could use some peace and contentment in their lives. Lower income populations, one-parent families, disabled populations the list can go on.I have been a yoga instructor for the Howard Center for a year now and I find that nothing has been more rewarding than giving a disabled class space for movement, laughter, and especially trust. I have seen great advancement in personalities, strength, and joy from experiencing yoga once a week.

3. EVO: What do you try to convey through your classes?

MM: I have heard many people say that they can’t practice yoga because they aren’t flexible. My advice to this statement is let your breathe be flexible and your muscles will follow. The aspect of Kripalu based yoga can help reiterate compassion and encourage finding ones own edge without harm. I always offer a lot of modifications in order for students to feel comfortable in every position and allow them to have appropriate time for each pose in order to attain a full stretch from start to finish.

4. EVO: If you could do yoga with anyone, who would it be?
MM: I would love to do yoga with Margaret Burns Vap. She is the founder of Big Sky Retreats out in Montana and hosts a Cowgirl Yoga Retreat. She leads the retreat on and off horseback and allows the yogi/horseback rider to deepen their horse/human connection and improve their overall well-being. The thought of finding bliss with yourself is wonderful, however being able to connect with a strong powerful animal like the horse has the potential to be mind blowing. We as humans are animals and finding a link to other four legged animals can help encourage a feeling of wholesomeness and awareness that we are all one living and breathing earth.
