by Rebecca Boedges
Through Nia we develop and enhance sensory IQ, how adept you are at noticing your own physical sensation in your body, such as pleasure and pain. By focusing on different areas of the body in class we train
ourselves to become more aware of the nuances of sensations that arise within our body. A way to further develop your sensory IQ is to spend time throughout your day focusing on sensation.

For example, do a body scan every morning when you get out of bed. Start with the feet and move up through the body. Notice if there are areas that are sore, feel stiff, or feel great. Make a mental note to check in with those areas of your body throughout the day to nurture, heal, enjoy, etc.

If you want to remember something specific throughout the day like “my wrists feel wonderful today,” wear a bracelet so every time you look at it you are reminded to check in with the sensation of your wrists. By practicing focus on sensory IQ throughout the day we further develop this part of ourselves. Through enhanced sensory IQ we enhance our ability to respond to the needs of our body.

Classes are generally one hour long and done in athletic or yoga-type clothing. Nia is practiced by people of all walks of life, ages and fitness levels. As classes are taught in levels, people new to Nia can easily step into a Nia class and feel right at home. No experience necessary! Our primary intention in class is to discover and play with the joy of movement. Classes are high energy, playful and a whole lot of fun!

There are three Nia classes taught weekly at Evolution Studio on a drop in basis: Saturday at 8 – 9 am, Tuesday and Thursday from 7:30 – 8:30 pm.
