AVSI is led by the Uhuru (freedom) Movement, which brings African people together in the U.S. and worldwide to build collective community sustainable solutions to the economic crisis that has hit the black community particularly hard.

These crucial programs include community gardens; water harvesting and solar energy systems; and in particular at this time, the self-reliance economic development projects.

This is a wonderful opportunity to both enjoy a yoga class and participate in positive social change.

We Hope to see you there!

In recent classes we’ve been fanning the flames of imagination! In a “Where the Wild Things Are” themed session, we read the Maurice Sendak book and took in the illustrations, and then dramatized parts of the story. We became the trees that grew and grew in Max’s room and the boat that he sailed. We performed a “wild rumpus” to music and also practiced “Be still!” (freezing in our wild thing poses). The wild things rolled their eyes, showed their claws, and roared lion’s breaths. We also did some staring contests, Max’s trick to tame the wild things, gazing deeply into our friends’ eyes.

Yoga kids also use their imagination to invent poses: become a chair, a table, and then partner with a friend to be a chair and table together.

Our closing ritual grows more heart-warming each time, as the kids discuss what Namaste means, sing a special song and chant OM together: “Namaste is what we say, to the good in you and the good in me. Say Namaste every day and the world will be in harmony.”

Hello Evolution,

Every October we clear two turtle nesting beaches with the help of volunteers. One beach is in North Hero State Park, the other is Sandy Point in West Swanton. The Spiny Softshell turtle is a threatened species in Vermont whose nesting habitat has been lost to lakeshore development. The Spiny Softshell nests at these two beaches along with other species. The beaches have been cleared of plant growth, but we go back every year to pull up the new growth from the summer just past.
Please join us for this great and necessary event.
Thanks,

Annual Autumn Turtle Nesting Beach Clean-up Day

Date: Saturday, October 24, 2009

Location: Start at North Hero State Park (NHSP)

Time: 10:00 AM start. Be sure to get to North Hero State Park (NHSP) by 11:00 AM as we may move to other sites when we complete work at NHSP, which depends on how many join us. We may be working until around 3:00 PM, but feel free to leave at any time.

Leader: State Biologist, Steve Parren, Program Coordinator Nongame & Natural Heritage Program of the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Join Steve and others for a workday, as he prepares stretches of beach [NHSP, and sites in Swanton] for the turtle egg-laying season next June. The threatened Spiny Softshell Turtle is Steve’s particular concern, and its nests are found on both beach sites, along with those of Map, Snapping, and Painted Turtles. While most hatchlings will have crawled up and out of the ground and into the lake by the end of September, some late hatching young may still be underground. We often find young as we pull up the current season’s plant growth from the shale pebble beach. By then the lake will be too cold, so they will be brought indoors for the winter.

What to Bring: Bring warm clothes in layers, gloves, and rain gear if needed. Bring only short handled tools, a trowel and/or a hand cultivator. Bring lunch.

Families welcome: If Steve has recovered some baby turtles (likely) he will bring and talk about them.

Directions: Route 2 north past Carry Bay in N. Hero. Right on Lakeview Drive, just before Rt 2 swings west toward Alburg. Follow Lakeview almost to end. North Hero State Park entrance and sign on left. Drive to end always bearing right. Please arrive between 10 and 11 AM.

I found myself taking a swim early one morning. Before me, a great stretch of cool, sparkling water shimmered all the way to the base of the Adirondack mountains across Lake Champlain.

And yet, preoccupied with this or that, I realized I was not content. Right away, I stopped myself to notice the beauty and freshness around me. With attention and focus, the scene became achingly lovely, I dropped the veil of discontent and truly enjoyed a dip.

Contentment is not wanting more than we have. It is our natural state and the reality of the cosmos. Still in our culture, it takes practice.

Sometimes the practice is of gratitude. What am I thankful for? What do I appreciate? Stopping during the day to focus on these things increases contentment.

At other times, it takes detachment. What can I let go of?

At night before I sleep, I often practice a short meditation by going through in my mind everything that I value. My husband, dog, house, livelihood, physical ability to move and so on. One by one, I let them go. Not that I will lose them necessarily, but I release control of having them.

And what is left? That which I can be content with.

Laughter, chatter, raucous mealtimes, swimming, and romps in the back yard.

And everywhere I turned there were Cheerios and watercolor paint plops. On the car seats, the sofa and the patio stones. Goings-on included a naked child trying to pee in the yard or soak me with tub water.

I was tired. So I took a break to walk my dog in the woods. After a few mindless steps, I stopped in my tracks to say to myself, “God, give me more than I think I have inside.”

I looked around as my consciousness expanded to embrace the surrounding deep, peaceful greenery. My heart grew beyond my own fatigue as the forest hugged me.

As we go within, our consciousness begins to extend beyond the body and mind and take into itself all that it encounters. The self becomes the greater Self. The result is peace, amidst the Cheerios.

UVB is the cause of most sunburn and cancer but UVA causes premature aging, wrinkling, and can also damage DNA.

Most sunscreens filter UVB though some also filter UVA rays. Sunblocks provide broad protection against many of the active UVA and UVB through ingredients like titanium oxide and zinc oxide.

SPF indicates the sun protection factor of UVB rays only.

UPF ultraviolet protection factor) rates protection from both types of harmful rays.

Water resistant sunscreens last only half the length of waterproof products, which maintain their SPF for 80 minutes after water exposure.

Enjoy summer safely and choose the shade once in a while!
