Mark your calendars for Saturday, July 17th at 6pm. I’ll be teaching a yogaLIVE! class outside (hopefully!) and then after we’ll have a potluck. This will be a great chance to spend time with the other yogis you practice with but have never had enough time to hangout.

If you’ve never been to one of my yogaLIVE! classes, it’s wicked fun. I teach my class and I’m accompanied by Steve Ferraris on percussion. The live percussion really brings the practice to another level. It’s really Steve and I working together to create a great energy and fun experience. And, on top of that, having the class outside should make for a great time for all.

The practice will be vigorous, but I do want people to bring their friends and have fun together, so I’ll do my best not to make it too crazy. :-)

The cost is just $20 (or $14 on your class card plus $6 donation to the drummer).

Pre-registration is recommended (but not required). You can pre-register by giving a call to Evolution at 802-864-9642 or signing up for yogaLIVE! the next time you are at the studio. See you there — John

For the past five years I have had the pleasure treating patients in low back pain studies run by Dr. Sharon Henry at the University of Vermont. If you have been at the studio, you may have noticed the study recruitment posters on the walls. This spring we started recruiting and treating clients in a study that compares two different types of treatment for low back pain. If you have low back pain, please consider being a participant in the study. Not only do you help contribute to the body of science that hopes to better understand and improve outcomes for people with low back pain, but you get six free physical therapy sessions and are compensated $100 for your time. Your treatment can be provided at Evolution PT and Yoga or one of the other treatment sites. I’ve attached the contact information below regarding the study recruitment information. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or wish to be considered for treatment.

Doing the Down Dog… With the Dog

You’ve heard of the Down Dog Pose, but what about doing the Down Dog with an actual pup? Doggie yoga, or “doga,” has taken off across the country, allowing for yoga enthusiasts to bond with their canine companions in an entirely new way. No Frisbees, rubber balls, or rawhide bones – doga is all about stretching, balance, and building a deep bond with your favorite pooch.

The practice of doga combines massages, meditation, and yoga stretches for both the humans and animals involved. Doga emphasizes the importance of constant physical contact between the pup and the owner. This contact helps otherwise nervous or jittery dogs to calm down as their owners do a variety of yoga poses around them, sometimes even using them like props. For example, in one Seattle Humane Society yoga session, the Down Dog is done just like it would be done any other time, except in doga, the top of your head does not rest on the mat, but on your pup’s relaxed or snoozing body. When a session is going well, most of the pups involved in the doga class will stay relatively calm, thanks in no small part to the gentle energy being generated around the room.

Doga is a generally new thing, and obviously has attracted its fair share of critics. It is lambasted as being a silly fad by some, especially because the idea of a dog doing yoga can understandably seem absurd. Yet, the experience can be hugely beneficial to both the dog and the human involved. Animals have long provided people with a sense of love and calm. Combining the relaxing and stress-reducing practice of yoga with the calming effect of a loved puppy’s presence invariably makes many dog owners happy, which in turn is good for mental health. In addition, just as owning a dog can encourage an owner to regularly take walks or jogs, doga can encourage an owner to regularly practice yoga. This will benefit the owner’s overall physical health. As for the pooches, many of the stretches and massages are done to encourage healthy digestion and circulation. However, most importantly, none of the dogs in doga are ever forced to participate in anything that would harm them.

All in all, doga should not so much be seen as an alternative to regular “normal” yoga sessions, but rather as another fun way to incorporate yoga into your life. It will allow you to bond with your beloved pet while also participating in a fun group exercise that gives you and your pup a break from the typical daily walk in the park.

Many of us Burlington yogis have found home at Chace Mill and have been students of Kathy at Yoga Vermont. The memories and seeds of inspiration sewn here will blossom in students for years to come. Though the building may shift, the sangha will remain. Thanks Yoga Vermont for founding such fantastic community, holding the space, and living the yoga teachings as you respond to lifes changes. Evolution sends much love and support to Yoga Vermont during this current shift and re-focus of spaces. Shanti Shanti Shanti OM.
