Anusara Moment: Sweetness

August 27th, 2009 by workingwellvt

Madhurya is the Sanskrit term for “lover’s devotion”. Not in the erotic sense but referring to the sweetness and completeness of giving and receiving perfect love.

I’ve experienced madhurya while placing clean, comforting cotton socks over my elderly mom’s swollen ankles. Or while staring at my husband’s face in the moonlight as he sleeps. Or taking in a deep, sweet breath at the lake shore at dawn.

Noticing and expanding this “sweetness” in our lives is one way to enrich and enlighten our daily experience and spirit.

Though it is a sweet state of Grace, madhurya involves much more. Resolute action, energy and momentum, fierce advocacy.

Think of the honey bee. No creature is more associated with sweetness yet possesses all of the above attributes.

May madhurya flow over your life like warm honey from a spoon!
