Anusara Moment: Perfect

March 31st, 2010 by workingwellvt

robiMy Golden Retriever Robi is perfect.

People who come to our front door don’t get past without a wildly wiggling dog rubbing hair all over them. She begs food and quickly gobbles whatever is on the floor.. She won’t get into the car when I want her to or off the bed on command. She strains enthusiastically at the least instead of walking quietly at my side.

An older friend of mine who is in a rehab center recovering from a badly broken bone wanted to see Robi. After entering the place, we stand at the top of the hallway lined with very sick people in wheelchairs. There are snacks littered on the floor.

Skeptical, I set off with her on a tight leash but she walks calmly.  At each wheelchair where she is wanted, she lays her head in the person’s lap. Is this my dog?

When we get to the right room, Robi gets gently on the bed and sits shoulder to shoulder with my seated friend who wraps her arms around her furry visitor.

On the way out, a daughter begs us to visit her mom.

Robi goes to the bedside, passing up the food on the floor. Again, she quietly gets up into the bed. I look at the nurse; she nods.

Robi lays down so she fits perfectly into the contorted, inert body of this woman who has had a terrible stroke. Then Robi lays her head on this woman’s chest as a claw-like hand comes up to rest over the dog’s neck.

I’m speechless at this point.

Perfection is lovely.  And often, we  have to be looking at the right moment.
